Last Young Renegade Album Review

Hi guys,

I've been waiting a good few years for a new All Time Low album and, after months of teasers from the album, the full album is finally out. Last Young Renegade is something completely different from the previous albums but its still raw and very All Time Low so it appeals to old and new fans.
The songs that they have released are all so different from each other, in terms of the feel, but they all symbolised the best aspects of All Time Low. Dirty Laundry was something completely different and, initially, I didn't even know what to think because it was so different to the other stuff and especially Future Hearts because it's much darker in tone and is lyrically beautiful. Drugs and Candy is another song that initially doesn't sound anything like the old stuff with the synth throughout but it didn't make the song any worse - just different. It's probably songs like these that old fans might be sceptical of but, if you keep your mind open, it's still fundamentally All Time Low just more mature which shows that they're evolving.

Nightmares is another song that is nothing like any of the old stuff but, it's still got the same effect on me as any of my favourite All Time Low songs like Therapy or Remembering Sunday. That's probably because the lyrics are so deep and impactful that I can imagine belting it out when I'm feeling angry or upset to get some sort of closure.

However, All Time Low didn't disappoint me with their more upbeat and higher tempo songs like Last Young Renegade and Nice2NkoU. The essence of this band is the ability to write a variety of different songs that all have distinct characteristics but are still able to blend with each other to create an amazing album. For example, Nice2KnoU is much more pop punk compared to the other tracks and reminds me a lot of classic All Time Low with the guitar chords opening the song and the distinct drumbeat.

The nostalgic feeling of Good Times was another completely different track and probably had some of my favourite lyrics of the album. It almost felt like the band were saying goodbye to us which initially got me really sad. However, I listened to it again, remembering that ATL are literally never going to leave, and interpreted it as them saying goodbye to an old era and welcoming a new chapter with their new label and new style of music. To me the lines, 'I never want to leave this sunset town But one day the time may come And I'll take you at your word and carry on' are so relatable and I think that anyone can listen to these words and remember a time that they felt like this. You don't want to leave a place with memories from a person but you have to go and take them and the memories wherever you go.

The album ends with a collab with Tegan and Sara on Ground Control, that I know the band were really excited to do, and Afterglow. The voices of Alex and Tegan and Sara work really nicely together and it doesn't feel as if they're having a battle for control or dominance, which is really hard with strong vocalists. It seems a bit more pop-like than the rest of the album but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I was a bit sceptical of Afterglow to start with but, as the song carried on, I started to connect to it and it seems like the perfect way to end the album. I feel like I keep repeating myself but this song is another one that's completely different from the norm - it finishes the album's journey. Interpret it in any way you want but I think by using 'afterglow', it's setting a tone for what's to come but staying where you feel the strongest, even if everyone around you moves on.

So, it seems as if, no matter that style the guys were going for, each song has it's own little story that fits into the wider Last Young Renegade concept. I guess you could think of each song as an episode in a TV series - each are distinctively different but they all come together to create a vivid story.

Final Verdict: For me, Last Young Renegade is the best one they've put out lyrically and each song hits a chord with me for different reasons. The album is progressive and moving pop punk into a new era. Is it too different from albums like Dirty Work or is it nice to see a band taking a risk and going down different routes?

That's it for this week,
Bye for Now
xx
