Peter Pan Inspired Songs

Hi my lil' fairies

It's been over 4 months since I got back from Disney World and you can probably tell from the title of this post that I haven't moved on and am still pretending to be in the world where dreams come true. Who can blame me? Anyway, it seems as if, since I've got back, Disney is everywhere I go and, in particular, Peter Pan seems to be referenced in so many songs - not that I'm complaining. I know it's probably always been the case but I've noticed it a lot more and finding it in the weirdest of places. It always makes me feel so happy inside when I hear a PP reference, so here are my top 3 songs with some sort of link to the Peter Pan! (I could put more on but here are my favourite)

1. Somewhere in Neverland - All Time Low
If you're not a fan of All Time Low, why not? If you haven't listened to this song, why not? Somewhere in Neverland was one of the first ATL songs I ever listened to and is probably my favourite - it also is pretty obvious that it's influenced by Peter Pan's story.

Wendy we can get away
I promise if you’re with me, say the word and we’ll find a way
I can be your lost boy, your last chance
Your "everything better" plan
Oh, somewhere in Neverland

Even though the song references Peter Pan so many times, it doesn't feel like a gimmick or some sort of tribute to the story. All Time Low managed to find a perfect analogy for their song that is basically about getting away from the hardships of life, running away with someone you love and doing whatever the hell you want! It doesn't directly reference not wanting to grow up, but shows the pressures of everyday life and, more than anything, wanting to get away for a bit and forget the world. The video is quirky, imaginative and pure All Time Low (I mean who else puts a hot air balloon with an ass on it). It takes all the best parts of Peter Pan and puts it in a pure pop-punk track that'll always be an important part of my life.

2. Being Young - Dalton Rapattoni
Most of you may have seen some of my other posts featuring Dalton Rapattoni so you'll probably know I'm a bit too obsessed with him and his new album, especially this song. Even though it makes references to Peter Pan directly, it looks at the story from a completely different perspective that no other song takes.

Peter take me home
Lock up my window
Won't you let me grow up
It's getting old being young

Instead of that craving desire to stay young, Dalton song is so much more realistic and talks about breaking away from the mould and moving on with his lift to see what it holds. I almost think he's drawing upon everyone kid's desires to want to grow up, ironic isn't it that we craved growing up so much and now, we just wan't to reverse time. Yet, we still want to live our lives and see what the conclusion of our story is going to be without the magic and innocence of childhood. I'm obsessed with it even though it's a bit darker and mature than the other songs. But, what else do I expect from Dalton? He makes you think.

3. Fly With Me - Jonas Brothers
So I honestly never really listened to this song and thought of Peter Pan. It wasn't until I got home from Disney and listened to it again on my IPod that suddenly everything clicked together. I mean how stupid could I be not seeing the link from even just the title alone?

If we chase the stars to lose our shadows
Peter Pan and Wendy turned out fine

Okay, so maybe the lyrics were more obvious than I first thought, but I think I was too immersed in the songs amazing tune to think about the lyrics. From those opening piano chords, this song is pure Disney pop and is still one of the best Jonas Brothers songs ever, even more now that I have properly embraced and taken in the lyrics. It's a typical love song and doesn't focus much on the actual story of Peter Pan and Wendy but uses their relationship as a comparison to what they want from love, to feel infinite and alive when you fall in love with a person so much. It's so innocent but has so much heart from a band that was so young at the time. Shame it took me all this time to really really appreciate the Jonas Brother's music.

So, there's my top Peter Pan inspired songs. I think the need to write this has come from my love for Disney and this franchise - a bit of intertextuality never hurt anyone? Let me know if there are any more songs you can think of, maybe there's some that you didn't even think were related to Disney :)

Until next time my musical chums,

Bye for Now
xx
