Busted Night Driver Album Review

Hey Guys,
This is exciting, my first post on this blog and what an amazing way to start! Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of heading down to HMV to see Busted do an acoustic gig and sign my copy of their BRAND NEW album Night Driver and the first one for over a decade.

Busted start the album with the very well thought out song titled 'Coming Home'. This song emphasises the fact that this band, who we never thought would reunite, are back and making music. As well as nicely starting off the album with a meaningful song, it also sets the tone of the album by showing off Busted's new more dance/synth style which is way different from those pop punk teens. Even though some people aren't a fan of this new style, I think it shows the new them because, let's face it, they're not the young reckless teens that they were when they started.

The whole album keeps nicely with the synth/techno theme which makes the tracks feel as if they ARE part of one album and belong in one place. Tracks like Night Driver and, their first single, On What You're On have an amazing, and quite surprising, club theme to it which really is miles away from pop punk . They have great tempo changes and show the musical diversity of Busted by being able to use this new genre but making it, technically, quite complicated.

It also seems as if a few of the songs have been influenced by different bands/eras as songs like I Will Break Your Heart and Out of Our Minds have a very 1975-esque vibe especially with the opening bars. Also there seems to be a very 70/80s vibe to a lot of the songs which is definitely something new considering how Busted use instruments for all their performances.

This album also shows Busted's talents in terms of the actual production of songs. The layering of voices, effects and beats in Thinking of You is a stand out of this song and I personally think that this song should've been their first single. It's slower than some of the other songs but the sound effects make it more fun and, from Children in Need, I know that its epic live.

My favourite songs off the album have a much slower tempo like Thinking of You. Easy has a bit more of McFly-ish feel to it with a bar or two of piano chords but, as it progresses, you then feel a bit of ol' school Busted with the electric guitars with is similar to Without It. It almost doesn't seem to belong in the album but I think, along with New York, it might be my favourite. New York is definitely a track that hit's home because it sums up the city perfectly and reminds me of the lights and bustle of 5th Avenue. The lyrics, 'Nothing Feels the Same', and 'Nothing Here Has Changed', really are beautiful lyrics and make this song stand out as being one of the best tracks, lyrically, in the entire album.

The album ends with Those Days are Gone and this is the perfect way to end the track and, could be perfect if done acoustically. It is quite odd in places with the random screeching *please let me know if there's a proper name for it* but it starts really nicely with the piano intro and then, as the beat and tempo changes, it sums up the album nicely. A fitting end to a new and unique album.

My Verdict:
If you listen to this with the old Busted in mind, then you will be disappointed because it's nothing like the old stuff. However, if you open your mind and act as if it was a new band, then you will be ecstatic because it's an amazing album even if it was very different from what I thought. There will be at least a few songs that everyone can love and, although it isn't for everyone, I'm loving the new fresh direction.

The whole album is consistent and flows really nicely! It's amazing to listen to all their voices and how mature it has gotten. So well done boys! This is definitely an album you have to listen too.

So give it a listen on YouTube, Spotify and ITunes and let me, and Busted, know what you think!

Bye for Now

xx
